Five years ago I watched my husband compete in a bodybuilding contest. It was his second time competing and my first time watching a show. Before he went on I had the opportunity to see women compete in bodybuilding and a figure division. I thought, hey – they sure are in shape! I’d like to do that! And that’s when my husband enrolled me at our local 24-hour gym and I went from pretty scrawny to a nice level of fitness.
Pre-Working Out – July 2009 – Ready to Start the Journey
But, like most women, I was always judging myself – wanting more definition here, more definition there. What was meant to be a 6 month journey towards a figure contest ended up being a five year one because at 35 (one month shy of 36) I finally said, “Screw it! I’m doing it!”
I had the necessary heels and bling. I bought a figure suit. I signed up for a local NPC contest. And here you go. I did NOT place. But I am officially an NPC competitor – I have a card and everything! And I got up on stage (and left) with a smile and a lot of confidence about myself.
What’s next? I keep on truckin’! I fell in love with fitness these past five years and will continue the fit life as a girl who lifts.
